Emily Haines is a Canadian singer/songwriter with a passion for what she does. She is the lead singer and keyboardist of Metric, as well as a member of Broken Social Scene.
While Haines had technically been on the scene since 1997, her debut album as Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, What Is Free To A Good Home? was released in 2007.
Her sound is warm and enchanting, weaving together slow, soft melodies with poetic lyrics for all an around beautiful experience. Her voice has a breathiness to it that is quite calming and gives her songs a more intimate feel.
Her newest album, Choir of the Mind is set to be released September 15, 2017, with a tour kicking off not too far after, starting in mid-October.
“I was trying to express, what I hoped there are moments of, is the sound of femininity as a strength that’s not in relation to men,” said Haines in an interview with Rolling Stone regarding her upcoming album. “It’s not even related to the male energy, the idea is what is a pure feminine spirit. We see so many perversions of it, whether it’s completely fetishizing very young girls. We know all the icons of Madonna/whore and all of this stuff, but where do we live for those of us who aren’t a mother or a child or a whore? That’s the spirit I’m trying to convey on the album, it’s that essence of femininity, without it having to be a reaction.”
The album is available for pre-order now, and tour dates are selling out fast. With Haines drawing from such a personal well of inspiration combined with her natural gift for crafting spellbinding tunes, it’s no secret that Choir of the Mind will be a treat.
