This past weekend of September 15 – 17 was a big one for music. The Meadows music festival took place in NYC at Citi Field. Headliners such as Jay-Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gorillaz took the stage for the three-day event. Surprise guest Nicki Minaj shocked fans by joining Future on stage. One of the festival’s highlights was seeing Jay-Z pay tribute to his Collision Course collaborator, Chester Bennington. The festival season is coming to a close. One last star-studded lineup was the perfect was to round out the summer.
Elsewhere in the Big Apple, other concerts were taking place. The Antonio Sanchez Group performed. Sanchez is a very well sought after jazz drummer. He became more well known after his incredible drum solo score for the movie, Birdman that he composed himself. He was joined by saxists Chris Potter and Donny McCaslin, as well as contemporary bassist Matt Brewer.
Rock ’N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Patti Smith performed at the SummerStage benefit show. She performed to honor her late husband Fred “Sonic” Smith. Smith’s two children, Jesse Paris and Jackson also joined her on stage for the festivities and performances.
New York City is notorious for hosting big name stars in all of the hundreds of venues. The smaller acts fly under the radar without being noticed. The music scene is consistently thriving all over the city. One of the best kept secrets are the smaller, more intimate venues for enjoying live music.
