Review: Grace VanderWaal’s Stunning Debut Album, Just The Beginning

21740648_2005840399700020_8404066833758742475_nThe wait is finally over. Singer/songwriter Grace VanderWaal‘s long anticipated debut album, Just The Beginning, was released on  November 3, 2017, and as the title suggests, it’s sure to be the start of something extraordinary.

Her sound consists of an enchanting combination of bluegrass, indie, and pop elements that soothe the ears and awaken the heart.

The album opens up with “Moonlight,” a song that Billboard exhaulted as “the perfect Summer song. They were not wrong. VanderWaal’s angelic, breathy voice that packs a surprising punch, especially during the chorus. This track has such great vibes, with its upbeat melody, and deep lyrics that reach for truth. Everything about “Moonlight” just makes you want to dance, even though it’s not your typical dance track.

“Just A Crush” is a sweetly sharp track that’s guaranteed to become a fast favorite. Witty and warm, this acoustic jam is all about the desire for freedom. Not only that, but it works to dismantle the commonly held belief that women want to settle down while men want to remain untethered by completely reverse-engineering it. The lyrics are honest and hard-hitting, showcasing a woman being true for her own sake, and the long term sake of her “crush’s” heart.

“So Much More Than This” switches up the tone a bit, as this track is more pop-oriented with an awesome flow. The beat is super catchy, and the message will return a spark of warmth to even the most jaded heart. This is the song to listen to on your morning commute when the world has taken the wind out of your sales and you’re in need of a pick-me-up, because there really is so much more to life than meets the eye, and this song is here to remind everyone.

“Florets” combines a catchy beat with dreamy, etherial imagery for a truly enrapturing love song. The combination is unexpected, yet undeniably beautiful, comparing the union of two lovers to florets floating in the air.

The album closes out on an amazingly heartfelt note with “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me.” Throughout Just The Beginning VanderWaal has showcased her ability to resonate with the listeners emotions time and time again, but this song really steals the show. The pure emotion her voice conveys tugs at the heartstrings and brings tears to the eyes, and that’s not an exaggeration. Poetic lyrics, amazing vocal control, and raw feelings come together in a perfect blend for one truly astounding song.

This may be Just The Beginning, but Grace VaderWaal has already accomplished so much. If this new album is anything to go off of, she definitely has a bright future ahead of her. This is one artist to keep an eye out for.

Thanks for your review! I’ve listened to the songs on Vevo and completely agree. I’d add that the song “Better Life” is also really good… “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me” is probably my favorite… I’m buying the CD

I don’t think they’ll change her. She seems like a very strong person and has a great family to back her up. I love that family as much as I do her, and that’s alot.

Believe me when I say the very best professionals in the are just as amazed by Grace….. just the way she is and they know this is an artist that has such great genius potential, they simply don’t want to kill it. So they know enough that you don’t do a single thing to change or alter what is already Perfectly Imperfect! ………and those high paid song writers in Sweden who actually write songs for everyone from Beyonce to Rihanna to even Taylor Swift gets help from them. Well even they…. know there is nothing they can do any better!

Grace Vanderwaal is a once in a Lifetime….. Talent that needs no help or recording industry Giants to Mold and Shape her. She’s going to be Shaping the Music Industry for a long time to come!!!

I think she will change music and more much like the Beatles did so many years ago. She is an anomaly and has many lifetimes of experience and knowledge all rolled up in that young brain and soul of hers. She will be leading the way in the future beyond music

I like all her songs but there are 3 that stand out to me. Talk Good, Florets, Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. I would have paid full price just for those 3 songs. I hope to live a long time just to hear what’s next from this genius singer/songwriter.
