The 2018 Met Gala won’t take place until May, but in the meantime the event’s theme and co-hosts have been unveiled. This year’s theme will be “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” which is meant to combine fashion and art with religion.
The show will be presented in Anna Wintour’s Costume Center, the medieval galleries, and the Cloisters. Many sacred ceremonial garbs will be on display for the event, such as the papal robe on loan from the Sistine Chapel sacristy. Donatella Versace is one of the 2018 Met Gala’s fashion sponsor, so we can prepare for many amazing looks.
Co-hosting with the iconic Anna Wintour are Rihanna, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace. Each of these people are on the forefront of the fashion industry and inspire us everyday. It’s also an all female group which we love to see.
As reported in Vogue, “By placing fashion within ‘the broader context of religious artistic production’ (like paintings and architecture), Costume Institute curator in charge Andrew Bolton, working alongside colleagues from the Met’s medieval department and the Cloisters, aims to show how ‘material Christianity’ has helped form ‘the Catholic imagination.’
