Amazon Creating Lord of the Rings T.V. Series

One Ring To Rule Them All…

One of the most popular movie franchises of all time, Lord of the Rings is coming to the small screen via Amazon.

Everyone knows sci-fi and fantasy are big draws these days when it comes to movies and television. One of the most popular movie series of all time, Lord of the Rings was just in a very close, and a  very costly bidding war between the top television and streaming services in the world.

Netflix, Amazon, and HBO were all bidding for the chance to take the series from the big screen to the small screen by expanding what we have seen from the movies and go deeper into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

As you can imagine the price tag became pretty hefty. At one point, HBO had to drop out of the race, Amazon and Netflix brought out the big guns, and their pockets are more profound than anyone realized. The movie series grossed nearly $6 billion dollars worldwide, so the rights to produce a television series was going to come at a hefty penny.

Amazon paid a whopping $250M to produce what is described as a prequel to the Peter Jackson movies. In a statement made by the head of scripted series at Amazon, the company sounds excited and hopeful about the new journey they are embarking on with the Tolkien stories.

‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking ‘The Lord of the Rings; fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.” -Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon.

This vast acquirement may be due to the tremendous success of series like HBO’s Game Of Thrones. There is no word yet on when the series will start production or who will star in the television adaptation.
