Nicola Formichetti Exits Diesel

On to the next

In the game of fashion, nothing is ever permanent. In a holiday surprise, Nicola Formichetti is leaving as creative director at Diesel.

Diesel is a brand known for being on the cutting edge of rocker-chic streetwear. So when they hired Nicola Formichetti a well-known stylist and former creative director for Thierry Mugler in 2013, things seemed like a match made in heaven.

Formichetti is best known for his work at Diesel but he is by no means a novice in the industry. He has deep roots in the magazine industry having worked at Dazed Digital as the fashion editor, V magazine, and serving as the artistic director of Vogue Hommes Japan. In 2010, he was named the Fashion Creator of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

Four years on, Formichetti has decided to part ways with the brand to pursue working on his own. In an interview with WWD, Formichetti, and founder of Deisel Renzo Rosso,  both spoke pleasantly about the split.

“We’ve had five fantastic years [including early interaction with Formichetti]. It was a fantastic collaboration. I really love very much what was done, and the relationship between us is really special.”-Renzo Rosso

“I’ve had a good time, but we both decided to end it here. I travel a lot to New York and Tokyo. I want to concentrate on my projects, but there will always be a bond between us.” -Nicola Formichetti

Formichetti also took to his official Instagram account to announce his departure from the brand but also thanking Renzo and wishing the brand well.

Although Formichetti is leaving Diesel, his dance card is very full. He continues to have a partnership with brand Uniqlo and is said to have other ventures in the works. Formichetti’s business partner Kevin Kollenda told WWD that Formichetti’s brand Nicopanda would be moving into other markets such as beauty and publishing.

Formichetti’s departure from Diesel is the end of a very stylish era, but we are looking forward to seeing what he has in store for his new business ventures.

Diesel has not announced who will succeed Formichetti as the artistic director at this time.
