As the cold weather settles in to stay, getting dressed becomes more and more difficult. The secret to achieving winter style that is both chic and functional is to reinvent staple pieces in your closet.
One underestimated wardrobe piece is the turtleneck. Fitted turtlenecks are great for keeping you warm but they also make the perfect layering piece.
Here are 5 ways to wear a turtleneck this winter, so you can up your style game without sacrificing your warmth:
Underneath A Dress:
Throwing a turtleneck underneath a dress is the perfect way to still get some wear out of your favorite sleeveless dresses. I love layering a turtleneck under a long silk dress paired with knee-high boots. You’ll have your extremities covered and will be wearing one of the season’s hottest trends.
Underneath A Silk Cami:
Few things look as crisp and clean as a structured turtleneck under a camisole tank. You can add jeans and combat boots for a more casual look, or a leather mini skirt, patterned tights, and heels for a night out on the town. The turtleneck just adds an unexpected detail that turns the whole ensemble up a notch.
Paired With A Statement Skirt:
My personal style icon Olivia Palermo paired her black ribbed turtleneck with a long floral skirt. Turtlenecks look great with either mini-skirts or longer ones and the simpleness of the shirt allows you to get creative with your bottom half. Opt for a statement skirt and heels and if you’re trying to brave the cold, add thick cable knit tights or an over-the-knee boot. It’s the perfect day-to-night look.
Underneath A Blazer:
Another undeniably chic trend is the plaid blazer. Bundle up by layering a turtleneck under your blazer with a pair of jeans, or if you’re feeling especially chic, opt for a matching plaid skirt. The shirt will create a solid backdrop amongst all of the busy plaid pattern.
Turtleneck Sweater Underneath A Coat:
Turtleneck sweaters look great under a long coat, like the camel one pictured above. Throw on a pair of jeans, statement heels, and a baker boy cap and you’re ready to brave the cold in style
