Review: Royal Blood gets epic on “I Only Lie When I Love You”

Coming in hot.

Royal Blood tops the Rock Radio charts once again with their new single, “I Only Lie When I Love You.”

19222651_1356831141048877_5508792389450916218_oBritish rock duo, Royal Blood, is starting 2018 off on a high note with the release of their new single, “I Only Lie When I Love You.” Reaching No. 1 on the Rock Radio airplay charts, this victory marks the third time in the band’s career that they made it to the top.

Royal Blood’s last album, How Did We Get So Dark? came out last June via Warner Bros. Records, making its debut at No. 1. It seems the vast amount of success the band enjoyed with this album has carried over into the new year, and if “I Only Lie When I Love You” is indicative of what’s to come, it’s only going to keep getting better.

The track itself imbues any room with an electric energy the moment that play button is pressed. “I Only Lie When I Love You” is marked by passionate vocals, a beat to dance to, and a guitar part that resonates with the soul. There’s a sense of intensity that’s hard to get enough of, which makes sense given the song’s dark topic.

Toxic relationships, while clearly bad for one’s health, often have an addictive quality to them that’s hard to explain. “I Only Lie When I Love You” captures this essence not only through its haunting melody, but also through its vivid lyrics that paint such a raw image of two lovers who drive each other to the edge.

“Go ahead, muck about
I got my conscience twisted
Pull your hair, make me shout
It’s just that you insisted I was good for nothing
Like you were onto something”

Physicality and mentality entwine in a chaotic dance that only fuels the fire. A destructive cycle, the relationship described can only end one way, in ashes.

“I only lie when I love you
I only crawl when I hit the ground
You only cry when I love you
I only lie when I make a sound”

There are tears, fights, and as the song’s title suggests, a lot of lies flying around. While not the healthiest mental state to be in, it’s hard to find someone out there who can’t relate at least a little. Its that combination of turmoil and realness that makes this track such a gem.

Royal Blood will be joining Queens of the Stone Age for a few shows early in 2018 before kicking off their U.S. headlining tour on May 28.
