Giants Add Offense With Andrew McCutchen Trade

Even-year magic, anyone?

The Pirates are now in rebuild mode, apparently. Just a short while after sending staff ace Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros, they have jettisoned former National League MVP Andrew McCutchen in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. In return, Pittsburgh receives pitcher Kyle Crick and a minor leaguer.

This is another splash from the Giants this offseason, who just recently acquired third baseman Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays. Both moves have made it clear that San Francisco is serious about contending in 2018 and increasing their run production in a very pitcher-friendly home park. The Giants were in the running to land Giancarlo Stanton earlier this offseason, so this move perhaps satisfies a bit of the production they would have had with Stanton in the lineup.

San Francisco is coming off a pretty horrific season in which they lost Madison Bumgarner to a dirt bike injury for most of the season and ended dead last in the NL West. They’ll look to rebound with their new acquisitions, a more cautious Bumgarner, and some even-year magic.
