Soon after Phoebe Philo left Céline, rumors began swirling about who would take over her coveted position as creative director.
The suspense is finally over; designer Hedi Slimane will be taking over Philo’s reign at Céline. Chairman of conglomerate LVMH made the announcement early Sunday morning saying,
“I am particularly happy that Hedi is back within the LVMH Group and taking the reins of our Céline Maison. He is one of the most talented designers of our time.”
Slimane previously worked in menswear for Dior and Saint Laurent. The designer will serve as Artistic, Creative and Image Director for Céline. One of the most interesting parts of this new hire is Céline has remained solely a women’s brand until now. Slimane has proven to be an expert in menswear, inventing the skinny suit at Dior and making all tight fitting men’s clothing chic and acceptable.
During his time at Saint Laurent, the designer rebranded the entire company, reinventing and updating the fashion house for the better. He made Saint Laurent, formerly called Yves Saint Laurent, edgier and more appealing to the younger generations.
The changes that Slimane will inevitably make to Céline are exciting and quite frankly, endless. A Céline menswear line is a very likely possibility and talks of a fragrance are rumored to be in the works as well.
Slimane has managed to retain his power and impact on the fashion industry throughout his entire career thus far, which is a difficult feat. He is sure to leave his mark on Céline just as he did with each brand he’s previously worked for.
