Ralph Lauren takes designing the new Team USA uniform to the next level by embedding them with self-heating wearable technology.
Red, white, and blue slender fitting parkas are the main highlight of this collection. The waterproof patriotic parka comes with an internal button that can be pressed when the user needs an extra dose of warmth. With three different heat settings that can be adjusted via the athlete’s cell phone, the jacket can remain warm for up to 11 consecutive hours.
In an interview with USA TODAY the Polo designer said:
“It’s the most technologically advanced jacket ever produced, there have been heatable blankets for kids before, but they have wires. This is a fabric with ink that heats up — it’s weightless, it’s conductive and it’s immediate.”
Besides the parka, the uniform includes: slim-fit moto jeans, an Americana inspired knit wool sweater, a navy bandana, fringed cowboy gloves, a leather belt and brown suede boots with red laces.
When Lauren was asked what motivated this collection, he shared that it was inspired by the jacket gold-medalist Michael Phelps wore when he carried the flag at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, Lauren stated that the heating technology the jacket has was exclusively created for the brand.
The uniforms will be manufactured and produced in the United States, using material and fabrics from local vendors in hopes of showing the country’s innovation and unity.
Although the Polo Ralph Lauren Team USA collection, was created for Olympic competitors it will be available in limited edition quantities in Ralph Lauren retail stores, RalphLauren.com and TeamUSAShop.com. A portion of the proceeds collected will be donated back to the U.S. Olympic team.
According to Lauren, similar items with the innovative technology will be available in a new collection that is due to launch during the fall.
Self-heating wearable technology might just be the next big thing in the fashion industry.
