Lil Wayne + DJ Drama’s ‘D6: Reloaded’ Better, Longer Than Original

Mixtape of the Week

While little has been said about when we can expect the highly-anticipated release of Tha Carter V, fans have been left clinging to the edge of their seats since Christmas, when Lil Wayne and DJ Drama released the sixth installment of their “Gangster Grillz” mixtape series.

Now, less than an entire month later, they have returned with Dedication 6: Reloaded, a brand new mixtape featuring 18 all-new remixes of some of the biggest hits from the past year. It also features original instrumentals from producer Rio, on the track “Abracadabra,” and samples of the late-Tupac Shakur on the outro track Bloody Mary” feat. Juelz Santana.

“Family Feud,” is a remix of the Jay-Z single from 4:44 (2017), in which he openly confesses and apologizes to his wife, Beyoncé, for his infidelities. The remix features Drake, who spends verses going back and forth with Tunechi about ongoing feuds, including Colin KaepernickBirdman, and Cash Money Records.

Lil Wayne strikes with punchline-after-punchline on the track “Big Bad Wolf,” a remix of Blac Youngsta and Lil Yachty‘s track “Hip Hopper” produced by Mike WiLL Made-It.

“Turn your kids into father choosers. Make your bitch a widow and your mom a cougar.” – Lil Wayne

D6: Reloaded is substantially more jam-packed, running almost double the length, and features original new verses to tracks from artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Migos, A$AP Ferg, Kid Ink, 6ix9ine, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Playboi Carti, Future, Lil Pump, SahBabii, Bryson Tiller, and Meek Mill.

Besides appearances from Drizzy and Juelz, the mixtape also features special appearances by Rich the Kid, Lil Twist, Jay Jones, Euro, Gudda Gudda, Vice Versa, Marley G, and Young Money Entertainment-signed singer/model Stephanie Acevedo.

Is the mixtape perfect? No… but it certainly has much more grittiness to it than the first volume. As a whole, the two-part Dedication 6 and D6: Reloaded package is much closer to the perfection achieved on Dedication 5, though it takes a little bit longer to get there.

There is still no telling what we can expect with Tha Carter V, but if it’s more of the off-the-dome wit we heard here than it’s certain to score big with fans.

RATING: 4.5 / 5
