Supermodel sisters, Gigi and Bella Hadid revealed themselves as British Vogue’s March cover stars. Each model as her own individual cover, shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Joe McKenna.
Gigi and Bella wore gold chainmail Versace gowns, straight from the Spring 2018 runway. This is editor-in-cheif Edward Enninful’s fourth cover for British Vogue and perhaps his most controversial yet. Taylor Swift graced the magazine’s January issue after the release of Reputation.
Gigi and Bella shared their stunning, individual cover shots on their personal Instagram accounts.
The covers are undeniably stunning with their hair styled in loose, undone waves and bronze, gold makeup highlighting their light blue eyes. However, it was the photo of the girls posing together inside the issue that caused controversy.
Bella and Gigi pose nude, facing each other with their legs intertwined. While artistic nude photos are not new, social media users thought the image was inappropriate and unnecessary as British Vogue is a fashion magazine, but the sisters weren’t even wearing clothes, which begs the question, “How does this relate to fashion?”
Twitter seemed to explode, criticizing Enninful for his overt sexualization of Gigi and Bella. One user wrote, “Must you fetishise them? Talented women. No need to be naked to pique our interest.” Another tweeted, “Uhhh I don’t know about how other sisters do sisterhood, but as a sister, this does not seem very sisterly to me!! #newvogue #muchdiverse.”
Tweets continued,“Really disappointed with @BritishVogue ‘s uncomfortable image of @GiGiHadid and @bellahadid. These sisters are doing so well in their careers only for Vogue to sexualize a sibling relationship in the most creepy and non-artistic way. Would you ever put two famous brothers naked..”
Others criticized the photo’s heavy use of photoshop, resulting in Bella’s face looking quite skewed and unfamiliar. A user tweeted to Enninful, “Bella is unrecognisable. ‘New Vogue’ same old beauty standards.”
While many agree that the shot is inappropriate, others view the photo as art that fuels conversation. Gigi and Bella are arguably the most famous supermodel sisters of the moment, and gracing the cover of British Vogue is a mark of success and feather added to their caps, nonetheless.
