In a time where rock and roll seems stale, grunge veterans, Stone Temple Pilots deliver something new to the scene.
The stakes are high for the band since the death of original lead singer, Scott Weiland who tragically passed due to a drug overdose in 2015. It was also noted that Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington had been a long-time sub for the group prior to Weiland’s death. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst when Bennington, dealing with his own demons, sadly also took his own life.
Grappling with two major deaths, the group worked hard to find the perfect man to fill in the empty slot. Currently, the four-piece is made up of new front-man Jeff Gutt, guitarist Dean DeLeo together with his brother bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz.
Recently, the boys released their second single called “Roll Me Under” off of their latest self-titled LP Stone Temple Pilots. Though, this is not to confuse it with their first self-titled album from 2010. The point of creating a second album named after themselves was to symbolize “rebirth” of a clean slate since announcing Gutt as their new vocalist and finally jumping back into creating fresh content.
Their first track entitled “Meadow” debuted as a formal introduction to the newly formed band back in November. Despite, the pitfalls fans found themselves infatuated all over again. The song is very reminiscent of the early 90’s short-lived hard-rock era, and Gutt didn’t fail to impress. It comes off as a classic Stone Temple Pilot song that grew their fame, with a tinge of Buckcherry vibes. The track also possesses a “grungy” feel similar to when Weiland rocked the stage in the early 2000’s.
However, “Roll Me Under” is a little less assertive than “Meadow” but still very rock ‘n’ roll just with a different spin, there’s nothing wrong with a little versatility after all. Filled with heavy riffs, swift drum battering, and Gutt’s blistering vocals echoing the tune, it’s one worth the listen. According to the band, it’s also a record that “breathes resilience.”
“Roll Me Under’ was one of the first songs I wrote for the album, and one of the first Jeff sang on too, “Guitarist Robert DeLeo told Rolling Stone. “Those riffs have been kicking around in my head for years, and it felt like the right time to record and perform it.”
Along with the unveiling of their new album which is available everywhere March 16, the quartet will also embark on a North American tour. The foursome will start their voyage this spring in Santa Clarita, CA and will end in Oshkosh, WI. These all-star metalheads will showcase a wide range of songs including ones never played live before. In addition to their own tour, the band will be playing Rock USA 2018 in July.
Tickets are currently available for purchasing as of today. A digital copy of the new self-titled STP album will also be included with the ticket purchase, except where noted in the tour dates listed in May-July. The album itself, however, is up for Pre-order and an instant copy of “Meadow” and “Roll Me Under” will be included. The latest updates and additional information can be found on the STP official website.
