YACHT is all about the bizarre.
The pop/dance group Yacht just released their latest video for their “Hard World” single and the video is rather interesting. Directed by Bojack Horseman supervising director Mike Hollingsworth, the video pays homage to an iconic sign along Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The Happy Foot and Sad Foot sign is for a foot clinic, but has held people transfixed over the last decade.
“When Hollingsworth took his video concept featuring the sign to the LA band, they couldn’t say no. He tells LA Magazine, “I was so excited to connect it with a band who, for me, really speaks to the L.A. music scene.”
The duo may have given a dance beat to “Hard World” but that shouldn’t take away from the intensity of the lyrics.
“The song is very much our animal rights song,” Evans says. “It’s about the vulnerability of living beings. And the video is kind of a weird match in a way—”
“—both are about everyday brutality,” Bechtolt says.
The sign has taken on a life of its own and has become a sort of talisman for many in the area. Depending on which way the spinning sign was facing them when they saw it would determine how they would make a decision or how their day would go. Los Angeles is nothing if not full of its urban legends.
The song is off of YACHT’s most recent EP Strawberry Moon out now. The band will be playing a small contingency of West Coast shows starting February 3rd.
