Kendrick Lamar creates more hype for Black Panther.
Hot on the heels on the incredible announcement that he would be curating the first soundtrack of its kind for the Marvel Universe’s upcoming Black Panther, rapper Kendrick Lamar has now released the first video from the album “All the Stars” featuring SZA.
The video is directed by Dave Meyers and the little homies who have worked with Kendrick previously on his videos for “LOYALTY” and “Humble.”
It’s visually stunning and much like the film’s trailers, the female star, in this case, SZA, dominates the screen as she dances through all of the stars in the galaxy. It also pays homage to much of the themes in the film as it heavily celebrates the different aspects of African culture and has the rapper walking through trees with actual black panthers surrounding him.
It’s also vividly colored. Each scene has sharp, bold colors that stand out against the background such as the blue outfits surrounding SZA as she dances in the forest and the gold-clad goddesses standing stoically as Lamar walks through the room.
It’s the first single from the album that features other rap and hip-hop artists such as Future, Khalid, and the Weeknd.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler told NPR that Kendrick was only meant to provide a song or two for the film saying that the studio was invested in making the collaboration work.
“And to Marvel’s credit, they really supported the idea of getting some songs from him. At first, he was just going to do a few songs for the film, and then he came in and watched quite a bit of the movie, and the next thing I know, they were booking a studio and they were going at it.”
It’s clear that the film was so moving, so inspirational in its celebration of black culture that the rapper simply had to work on the album and then went on to curate the entire tracklist.
The album comes out Friday, February 9th, a week before the film’s release into theaters.
