Over the weekend, Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, made a surprise appearance during a DJ set in Denver to announce that the rumors are indeed true… a new Black Star album is on its way in 2018.
In a 22-second audio clip from the performance, which was later uploaded to SoundCloud, Yasiin Bey announced that he and Talib Kweli have returned to the studio with producer/DJ Madlib for their new yet-to-be-titled album. According to Reddit user Mellowtooth, who shared the audio clip online, “Yasiin showed up after performing elsewhere in Denver with Talib Kweli the same night.”
The duo first recorded the collaboration album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, in 1998 and have performed together many times over the years. Their debut album was largely produced by Hi-Tek, who later formed the duo Reflection Eternal with Kweli in 2000, with additional production by 88-Keys, J. Period, Da Beatminerz, Jason Rawls, and Ge-ology.
Rumors began to circulate on January 31st when Talib Kweli shared a photo on Instagram of Yasiin Bey and acclaimed rapper/producer Kanye West, who is rumored to appear on the album as well. West, whose album The College Dropout (2004) was released 14 years ago this past weekend, worked with both Kweli on the song “Get ‘Em High” with Common and Yasiin Bey on the track “Two Worlds” also featuring Freeway and The Boys Choir of Harlem.
