Mary J. Blige joins Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy

Assassin’s Heart

Mary J. Blige has joined the Umbrella Academy.

After an outstanding and heavily award-nominated performance in 2017’s Mudbound, singer Mary J. Blige has chosen her next role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blige will star as a series regular on the Netflix adaptation of Gerard Way’s comic series Umbrella Academy.

The comics, written by the former frontman of My Chemical Romance, surrounded a dysfunctional family of superheroes also known as the Umbrella Academy. It consists of the Monocle, Spaceboy, the Kraken, the Rumor, the Séance, Number Five, the Horror and the White Violin. Unlike the common superhero tropes, the characters in this story will work together to solve their father’s murder, but they start to come apart as their abilities and personalities do not gel.

Netflix said in a press release,

“The comic series garnered much praise from fans and critics alike for its alternate and twisted take on the superhero genre.”

Blige will playing the ruthless, time traveling assassin named Cha-Cha. Her lack of human connection makes her a sadistic sociopath that revels in the torture and pain of her victims. However, she does have a soft spot for her partner, Hazel, who has yet to be cast.

It’s an interesting choice for the R&B singer. All of her roles thus far have been vastly different, but this is the first action role she’s taken on; a role that she’s rumored to have specifically sought out. Taking this role, specifically after such a serious role in Mudbound, shows her range as well as her serious acting chops.

The cast rounds itself out nicely with Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castaneda, and Aidan Gallagher.

Gerard Way will executive produce alongside Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment as well as show runner Steve Blackman who has worked on the  current Netflix hit Altered Carbon.

The show is still in the early stages. Netflix has not released date of release, but eager fans speculate it will be sometime during 2019.
