The Smashing Pumpkins can’t smash the drama.
It’s impossible for any fan of the 90s alt-rock band the Smashing Pumpkins to be oblivious to the drama currently swarming their upcoming reunion tour. First, frontman Billy Corgan shaded former bassist D’Arcy Wretzky on Instagram. Then Wretzky stated that she was invited to join the reunion, but Corgan rescinded the offer. This angered Billy and the group released a statement yesterday.
“In reuniting The Smashing Pumpkins, the band’s dedication remains to its fans and its music. To that, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and William Corgan haven’t played a show with D’arcy Wretzky for over 18 years. But it’s not for a lack of trying. For despite reports, Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-to-face, and in each and every instance she always deferred. We wish her all the best, and look forward to reconnecting with you all very soon.”
However, today is a new day and with that comes fresh drama. Despite the above statement stating that she has rebuked offers to join the highly anticipated reunion, D’Arcy has decided enough was enough. In an exclusive with Alternative Nation, the former bassist puts Corgan on blast with a slew of text messages clearly stating otherwise.
The texts prove that Billy Corgan had in fact reached out to D’Arcy inviting her to be part of the reunion in whatever capacity she was able to commit to. He wanted to be able to let fans know that the door was open to her, an original member and she responds by saying she was upset not to be included before.
The two discussed her shoulder injury as well as the pressure the group faces in this new age if the tour does not succeed. He then offers her a “Guns N’ Roses offer” wherein she plays a few songs each night so fans get the experience they want.
It’s evident in the texts that she is willing to participate in whatever capacity they are allowing her and goes entirely against Corgan’s previous statements. Text messages can surely be doctored as anyone can change a name in a phonebook, but it would seem absurd for D’Arcy to fabricate this exchange as it aligns with what Corgan has already said. She also would have nothing to gain by being caught in a lie.
This adds an entirely new layer to the already thick and murky drama that has come from the Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour. It would be nice to see the two make amends, but at this rate, it seems that it’s an uphill battle.
Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins have yet to comment on the texts.
