Danielle Herrington made her debut in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 2017, now she’s taking on the cover of the coveted magazine.
Photographed by Ben Watts, the 24-year-old California-native is seen on the cover wearing a vivid, eye-catching pink bikini splashing around in the crystal blue waters of the Bahamas.
While Herrington can sport an itty-bitty bikini and look flawless, that is not the only reason why her appearance on the cover is such an exciting moment- she is the third black woman to grace the cover since the magazine’s beginnings in 1964, proceeded by Tyra Banks and Beyonce. This cover marks another step in the right direction towards diversity in the industry.
In an interview with Good Morning America Herrington, shared that she started modeling at the age of 13 after being inspired by Tyra Banks Sports Illustrated cover photo in 1997. The model stated she looked up to Banks ability to break barriers and open doors for other African-American women.
The supermodel Tyra Banks surprised the model with a heartwarming message on “GMA” today;
“Do you really understand what’s going down right now? Do you really understand how your life is going to change? So many little girls are looking at you, ‘OMG, that could be me one day.'”
Banks continued: “There are so many people telling little girls that look like us that we’re not good enough, and that we can’t achieve our goals, but by looking at me back in the day and looking at you right now. You are the living embodiment to say that dreams do come true.”
Herrington responded by stating she hopes to continue inpiring girls and women all over the world to achieve their dreams just like Banks inspired her.
This year’s 54th edition also features 36 other models including Ashley Graham and Kate Upton, five-world famous athletes, five mothers, four published authors, six model search contestants, 10 women featured in the ‘In Her Own Word’ and 12 rookies.
