Global Spin Award Honorees of the night included Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, and more.
DJ’s are as significant to music as the notes themselves, and Thursday night in Los Angeles, the industry came out to honor the creme de la creme of the industry with Snoop Dogg or “DJ Snoopadelic” hosting the event.
The GLOBAL SPIN AWARDS was established to honor DJs from across the globe for their contribution to the music and entertainment industries. The GSAs have been classified as the Quality Standard of DJ Recognition by music industry heavyweights. Actors have the Academy Awards; Musicians have the Grammys, and now DJ’s have the GSAs.
Many industry greats, artists just getting started, friends, family and more came out to support the 6th annual awards show. Rev Run‘s children; Angela, Vanessa, and Jojo Simmons, The Combs Family, Love and Hip-Hop star Amara La Negra, and Nicole Scherzinger all came out for the big night.
In addition to recognizing DJs for their significant role within today’s culture of music, the show honored two timeless legacies from the industry: Usher presented Jermaine Dupri with the Breaking Barriers Award, and Pharrell presented Timbaland with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jermaine Dupri has been a groundbreaker in the industry over the last three decades as he has worked behind the scenes with artists such as Mariah Carey, Migos, Janet Jackson, and even Weezer. Mr. Dupri was humble and gracious as he accepted his award.
“I’m truly blessed to be honored with the Breaking Barriers Award. I’ve worked with so many talented artists and DJs to produce great music over the years. The secret to breaking musical barriers is simple – practice makes perfect. For all the DJs out there that have supported and accepted me, I thank you for playing my records and sharing it with the world.”
Another big honoree of the night was artist Timbaland who took home the award for Lifetime Achievement which was presented by longtime artist and friend Pharell Williams. Timbaland has had his hand in the fabric of the hip-hop and pop genres over the years. He has worked with everyone from Missy Elliot, to Justin Timberlake, and everyone in between to create and bring us some of the most unique and beloved songs of the past three decades. The musical icon shared his thoughts and love for the industry and let everyone know that he’s not done yet.
“I love music. I was a DJ first, and when I didn’t like the music out there, I decided to make beats and create music for the fans. I’d really like to thank all the DJs that have played my records, and continue to play my records every day. It feels a little weird receiving this Lifetime Achievement Award, because I feel like I’m just getting started.”
In addition to these talented industry greats being honored, there were some insane performances as well. Sean Diddy Combs, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg and Ludacris joined the stage together to perform “Welcome to Atlanta.” Another big performance of the night was Fabolous and Jadakiss taking the stage together. Nipsey Hussle who is having a big week with the release of his album Victory Lap also performed along with A Boogie.
Big winners of the night included DJ Khaled who won DJ of the year and Hip-Hop DJ of the year, DJ Carisma who won Female DJ of the year, and Diplo who won International DJ of the year.
