Two members of Pussy Riot went missing without a trace

“Free Pussy Riot… again”

Three detained, two missing in action…

The Russian feminist protest punk-rock group called Pussy Riot is known for sporadically causing chaos as a way of speaking up against authority. This time, however, they’ve found themselves in a more serious dilemma than before. It has been reported that three of the women were detained by police upon their arrival to Crimea, a Ukranian peninsula on the Russian border, on Sunday, and the whereabouts of two members are still unknown.

Facing jail time isn’t something new to the Moscow based collective, who already has a track record of fighting for their rights.  It’s never been a secret that the band was formed solemnly for that purpose. Their music clearly justifies that message loud and clear as they sing about LGBT rights, civil disobedience against Russian President Vladimir Putin, and violation of the Russian Orthodox Church. The lyrics started to turn heads, and the band eventually started to appeal to crowds as they rose to prominence in 2012.

So what exactly made them surface to the scene? Three members of the group Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevich were arrested that same year and charged with hooliganism after violating a sacred place to belt out a “punk prayer.” Eventually, the trio was convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred,” which made them the center of controversy plastered throughout Russia.

The group was also notorious for staging unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances for their music videos, which definitely didn’t help the perplexity of the situation. For leading lady Alyokhina, it’s a never-ending battle, as she was the first to be detained twice in just a two-day split.

According to a recent report from Radio Free Europe, Alyokhina along with fellow members Olya Borisova and Aleksandr Sofeyev were tracked and detained in various parts of Simferopol where they were then taken to a nearby medical office to be tested on February 26th. Nobody knows why the tests were performed or what for as a lot of information is still undisclosed to the public. The threesome was later released.

It was also witnessed by an on-call correspondent that authorities detained Alyokhina again, just a day later while in a local cafe, after being confronted by a group of men labeled as “Crimea’s self-defense.” The motive behind their arrest comes from their plan to protest outside of a Siberian prison on behalf of Crimean film director Oleg Sentsov, who was imprisoned there after being declared guilty of terrorism charges in 2014, that August. Records also show that two of the recent captives, Alyokhina whom was the only one set free, and Borisova, were also detained during their involvement in that same protest.

After Alyokhina was released, she was brought to a local police station for questioning, fans then started to become concerned about the whereabouts of the other two, hoping that they were also okay.

In unfortunate circumstances, the remaining members of Pussy Riot turned to Twitter where they were seemingly uneasy stating that Borisova and Sofeev were missing in action after cops “broke their phones and computers” keeping them out of reach.

It was also reported that the pair planned to fly back to Moscow this morning but have not been seen on the flight, causing increasing panic among fans. Confused and worried the group hasn’t been able to get a hold of either of them in days, and neither has their lawyer. Though some are thinking the worst, it’s safe to say that they are alive and well but still remain in FSB custody. For whatever reason, a lot of the pieces to this puzzle are still up in the air, and it’s unclear why they aren’t allowed to come forward.

UPDATE: After the news spiraled across social media, Pussy Riot posted a second tweet confirming that both Borisova and Sofeev have been found, and are doing well, though further information as to why the women were taken into custody without a word is still not very conspicuous.
