Crazy Covers

“Crazy Covers” is an exclusive new feature that takes a look back at some of the most unexpected cover songs in music. Be sure to check out Salute Magazine, every Wednesday for more. This week, we take a look at Australian singer Paul Conrad’s cover of Jeezy.

Deep-throated Australian alt-pop singer Paul Conrad performed an ominous, downtempo cover of “Go Crazy,” by Young Jeezy, from his 2005 studio debut, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101.

The original track was produced by Don Cannon, the former VP of A&R at Def Jam Recordings who co-founded the label, Generation Now, and who would later sign Lil Uzi Vert in 2015. It features Jay-Z on the track, which features samples of “(Man, Oh Man) I Want To Go Back” by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions.

“Go Crazy” went on to chart at No. 22 on both the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop and Hot Rap Tracks charts. Another remix of the song was released later that year featuring Fat Joe. The song was a major inspiration behind Lil Wayne‘s 2008 hit single, “A Milli,” which features an interpolation of Jeezy’s lyrics.

Conrad first emerged in the Aussie music in 2013 with the track “Thanks for Nothing,” which he followed with his breakout single, “Heresy Baby.” He would go on to release a number of singles including “California,” and his most recent “Polaroid.”

With a truly unique sound, he definitely kind of fits in with the Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith style of singer-songwriters, with an almost brooding, dark pop sound. Apart from his cover of Jeezy’s hit single, Conrad released a five-track cover album, which he arranged, produced, recorded and performed himself. The album features covers of “Ghost” by Halsey, “Coco” by O.T. Genasis, “Got the Life,” by Korn, “If you could only see” by Tonic, and “Cold Desert” by Kings of Leon.

To hear more from Paul Conrad, be sure to check out his music on Bandcamp, which is available for to download for free at no cost. He adds that for anyone who should wish to make a donation, all of the proceeds from his music will go to the Heart Foundation.
