Lana Del Rey covers Madonna’s ‘You Must Love Me’

Broadway dreams

Don’t cry for me, Lana Del Rey.

The queen of California dreaming, Lana Del Rey, has released a cover of Madonna’s “You Must Love Me” from the 1996 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita.

Lana Del Rey’s cover will appear on the new Andrew Lloyd Webber double-disc set Unmasked: The Platinum Collection.

Unmasked is being released in celebration of the iconic and award-winning songwriter’s 70th birthday and will include both his greatest hits from shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sunset Boulevard and Cats and newly released tracks, according to Fader.

“You Must Love Me” was not in the original Broadway production of Evita, but was instead written for the 1996 film adaptation of the life of Argentinian leader Eva Perón in an effort to be considered in the Best Original song category at the 1997 Oscars.

It went on to win the coveted award after a powerful performance by the Material Girl that year.

In a press release, Del Rey says of being asked to participate in the compilation:

“Andrew Lloyd Webber has been one of my primary inspirations in music, so to do a cover of one of his songs is a dream. I especially love this particular song, ‘You Must Love Me,’ because of how unique the melody is. I’ve been incredibly inspired by all of Andrew’s work from Phantom of the Opera to Evita.”

Del Rey’s version of the song differs from the Madonna original. While not much as changed in the musicality, it’s the delivery that differentiates the two.

While Madonna’s is extremely powerful and packs the punch of the play, Lana’s is more subdued, softer. There’s a tenderness to the cover that isn’t as present in the Madonna version.

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber was thrilled with the addition of Del Rey to the compilation.

“Lana Del Rey sings beautifully, and with a haunting echo, over the simple piano accompaniment. Singer and song express neediness, devotion, bravery and command, all at once, a clever, seemingly effortless trick of Rice’s syntax.”

Unmasked will be released March 16.

Keep up with music at Salute.
