Chance the Rapper is turning rumor to truth.
Last year, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino let slip that he was working on a secret project with Chance the Rapper. However, nothing ever came of the rumor. As of this week, it’s no longer a rumor.
Speaking at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art as part of Pitchfork’s “In Sight Out” series earlier this week, the Chicago native discussed activism, politics, acting and his role in the city’s economy and culture. Of course, it would be impossible to have Chance in conversation without fielding questions about music.
One smart attendee, journalist Adrienne Samuels, asked about the rumored collaboration between the two rappers. Chance admits that they started the rumor and reveled in the wildfire spread before ever even considering the project seriously. He stated,
“We perpetuated that rumor for a long time without recording anything. We did link up in Atlanta and record some tracks and… they’re amazing.”
While he was willing to offer up information on that collaboration, another attendee went one step further and asked Chance what the status was on the new music he was working on with fellow Chicago native Kanye West. Of course, a man can only reveal so many secrets and as Billboard points out, the rapper remained tight lipped on the Kanye front.
It’s evident that Chance and Glover still want to keep aspects of their project together under wraps, but for fans of both artists, it’s exciting. Neither has put out new music in over a year. Chance previewed a song on Instagram in August, but hasn’t made any announcement since. Gambino recently announced that he was going on tour, which leads fans and critics alike to believe that his last and final turn as the alter ego is well on its way.
The collaboration does not have a title, release or structure yet. Stay tuned to Salute for more updates.
