REVIEW: Yachty reels in a hit with ‘Lil Boat 2’

‘Stepping out of the Kiddie Pool’

The 20-year-old “mumble” rapper quickly lit up the rap scene in 2016 with his debut mixtape, Lil Boat, which would catch the attention of other hip-hop artists who were skeptical about Lil Yachty and his potential at first. However, in the two years that followed, he has since established himself as an industry hit-maker with practically a dozen guest appearances on some of the hottest records in the past year.

lilboat2Now, he returns to shore with his second full-length studio album, Lil Boat 2, the highly anticipated sequel from Quality Control Music. The album opens with “Self Made” a slightly more ego-driven track about his accomplishments, which he follows with the trap anthem “Boom!” featuring UglyGod on this track about guns and shooters.

Don’t let the track titles fool you. “Oops” featuring 2 Chainz and K$upreme, might be one of the album’s more witty and satirical songs, but if you listen close enough, you’ll catch Yachty spit some of his most lethal bars.

Canary yellow diamonds like the wrapper of a Butterfinger / Hit him, then my brother follow up, that’s a double stinger / Told the bitch, “True” she runnin’ ’round like she Jerry Springer / It could be an opera singer

Yachty links up with Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley on the track, “Get Money Bros.” from producer 30 Roc. The duo team up to body their verses like the classic Nintendo Koopa-stomping heroes, the Super Mario Brothers. And things really start to get turned up on the track, “Count Me In,” featuring a more experimental beat from producer Pi’erre Bourne, who is perhaps best known for his work on the single, “Magnolia” by Playboi Carti.

“Love Me Forever” is a noteworthy ballad track from producer Buddah Bless, which Yachty follows with the exceptionally lit, “DAS CAP,” from producer Southside, co-founder of the 808Mafia production team. We also start to hear a more experimental side of Yachty on the track, “Pop Out.” Produced by Digital Nas the song is coated in electronic dissonance as Yachty and Jban$2turnt exchange verses.

Lil Boat 2 is vastly superior to his debut. Although it is approximately one-minute shorter, it features a slew of guest appearances including Offset and Quavo of the Atlanta rap trio Migos, NBA YoungboyLil Pump, Lil BabyPnB Rock, and 18-year-old Ohio rapper Trippie Redd.

RATING: 4.5 / 5
