First Look: Come Sunday

Does hell really exist?

Come Sunday depicts Evangelist Carlton Pearson’s struggle.

What happens when a thought-provoking film is too secular for Christian media but also too Christian for secular studios?  It lands on Netflix of course! Directed by Joshua Marston, Come Sunday stars  Chiwetel EjioforMartin SheenCondola RashadJason SegelDanny Glover and Lakeith Stanfield

The film is based on the 2005 episode of NPR’s “The American Life.” Depicted are the real-life events of Pentecostal Bishop, Carlton Pearson, and his clash of beliefs with his congregation and ultimately his church leaders. When Bishop Pearson questions the validity of hell existing, it raises the concerns of his flock. Here is the synopsis of Netflix’s Come Sunday:

From director Joshua Marston, Come Sunday stars Academy Award-nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lakeith Stanfield, Jason Segel, Condola Rashad, and Martin Sheen. It’s the moving story of Bishop Carlton Pearson’s personal journey from leading a religious congregation to being labeled a heretic.

The trailer begins with a solemn Bishop Pearson singing “Jesus Loves Me” while studying his Bible. Pearson is seen as a loved and respected Evangelist amongst the congregation of his church. He shouts and is animated in the delivery of his heartfelt sermon declaring the world needs to be saved.

Pearson is highly regarded amongst his church leader peers. As he travels to see his incarcerated uncle, an event occurs that changes his perspective on the reality of hell. After he hears the voice of God speak to him, Pearson wants to share what he has heard even if it is at the risk of his ministry.

When Bishop Pearson divulges to his congregation that God told him everyone is already saved, it creates an uproar within the church. People dispute that he can’t just go re-write the Bible to which Bishop Pearson coveys he is not re-writing it, he’s just re-reading it. This causes a schism within Pearson’s church as his colleagues plead with him to reconsider his stance. Not just for his church but for his self as well.

Pearson is accused of false doctrine and being a heretic. People question if it was really God’s voice Pearson heard. However, Pearson replies he has never been surer, and he refuses to back down.

Come Sunday hits the program queue April 13, 2018.
