Shawn Mendes opens up about secret mental health struggle

Tame the nerves

Shawn Mendes is speaking up for mental health.

Singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes has been feeling the pressures of fame and all that comes along with it.

On his newly released single “In My Blood,” the 19-year-old breaks away from the ambiguity of his former records and instead focuses on something more real, more grounded in truth: the mounting anxiety he has felt since his career took off.

Help me, it’s like the walls are caving in
Sometimes I feel like giving up
No medicine is strong enough
Someone help me
I’m crawling in my skin

In an interview with BillboardMendes said of the shift in lyricism,

“I’m really proud of it. I think, especially, comparing that to all of my other music – I love all of my other songs, but…it was all kind of more vague topics about a relationship, and this is my first time breaking into something that’s more serious and more about me.”

He backs that up in an interview with Beats 1 by saying,

“Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety, found it kind of hard to understand, and then when it hits you, you’re like, ‘Oh my god, this is crazy.'”

In a time when feelings are displayed like bleeding, open wounds across the Internet, it’s this sort of honesty that resonates with fans.

It gives them the opportunity to see themselves in the music and think, “Okay, this is why I like this artist. They get it, they understand me.”

Mendes knew that it was that vulnerability that was going to set his forthcoming album apart from his previous work.

“I walked in and I was like, the only way we’re going to step up — regardless of my singing or the ways the melodies are or production — the only way things are going to get better is if it’s more honest. And that’s why I started with the whole, ‘laying on the bathroom floor.’ Like, how raw can we get? And let’s work back from there.”

“In My Blood” is the first single off of the yet to named third LP from Shawn Mendes. There is also no release date beyond 2018.

Keep up with music at Salute.
