Hailing from North Bergen, New Jersey, 19-year-old rapper 070 Shake recorded her first single in 2016 and in less than two years she had racked up millions of SoundCloud plays, with guest features on tracks from Lil Yachty and Fabolous. Her unique mix of deep-throated, expressive vocals and sharp-witted lyricism eventually caught the attention of Kanye West, who signed her to his label, G.O.O.D. Music in 2017.
Her confidence, honesty, and emotionally charged force set her apart from similar singers/rappers like Rihanna. 070 Shake is not motivated by consumption, wealth, or superficial pleasures.
“It’s not time for talking about money. We have to talk to people about real shit,” she said in a release. “If you project these things to people, they are going to think you need that to be happy. No. You need love.”
Her six-song debut, Glitter EP, was released last week and is a powerful display of what the young rapper is capable of. It features production by Razsy Beats, Billy Hall, and The Kompetition.
It opens with the spoken word intro “I Laugh When I’m with Friends But Sad When I’m Alone,” which builds into an R&B soaked instrumental. Shake is joined by her 070 collective cohort Phi on the track, “Somebody Like Me,” a bold declaration from the emerging young rapper about what sets her apart from the rest.
“Lost in Love” is another noteworthy track for its fast-paced, electronic-tinged sound, which she follows with “Mirrors” an inspirational track about overcoming personal demons. The lead single “Stranger,” has some of a “mumble rap” element to it that makes it one of the more unique moments of the album. The EP closes with “Glitter,” a somber, downtempo track that builds into an anthemic afro-pop melody, which captures the experimental feel of the record.
070 Shake’s debut mixtape is truly a powerful performance that any real fans of hip-hop and R&B music must hear.
