First Look: Cargo

Martin Freeman has some unwanted baggage

In Netflix’s Cargo, an afflicted man struggles to find a guardian for his baby in the wake of an apocalyptic plague.

Cargo is a 2017 Australian horror film that is coming to the streaming service Netflix. The film stars The Hobbit and Black Panther‘s Martin Freeman,  Anthony Hayes, and Caren Pistorius. It is written and directed by Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling. The duo based Cargo off of their short-film they made of the same name. The film centers on Freeman’s character, Andy Rose, who is desperately trying to outrun a deadly pandemic that has swept through humanity turning its victims into raging cannibals. When a horrific attack happens, Andy is infected, his wife is killed, and his baby needs a guardian to watch over her before Andy succumbs to the virus.

With time quickly running out, Andy stumbles upon an indigenous tribe that could be his baby daughter’s salvation or yet another hurdle for him to overcome before he turns. Cargo also stars David Gulpilil, Susie Porter, Kris McQuade, Bruce R. Carter, and Natasha Wanganeen. Here is a synopsis of the film, Cargo.

From the producer of The Babadook, and starring Martin Freeman, comes Cargo. Based on the viral short film, this is the story of a man and his infant daughter who are stranded in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in rural Australia. And when he becomes infected, the countdown begins for him to find her protection before he changes forever.

The trailer begins with displaying the sweeping landscapes of Australia. A lone boat is seen transversing down a river. Andy and his wife are journeying down the river with their infant daughter. They quietly scavenge other wrecked ships alongside the coast. A voice-over says the country is changing and that everyone gets sick. When Andy’s wife Kay surveys a deserted boat, she is bitten by someone who is infected with a new disease that kills/reanimates its victims and changes them into blood-thirsty cannibalistic creatures.

While holding his daughter, Andy sees a trail of blood and realizes his wife has been bitten. Andy proclaims in a voice-over that those who are bitten have 48 hours before they turn. Kay forces Andy to take their daughter and leave. When Andy is forced to go, the last time, he says his wife she has completely transformed into something inhuman. But before he can get away, Andy is bitten by her. Now with only 48 hours left before he himself turns, Andy must find a suitable guardian in the outback of Australia.

As he travels through abandoned communities, he runs into a girl he befriends. The girl says she knows of a shaman who she believes can heal Andy, but they will have to race against time as Andy’s infection begins to take hold. Along the way, the three-run into more survivors but are beset upon by a horde of the infected. The trailer ends with an array of footage depicting Andy desperately trying to get his daughter to safety, and finally him kissing her goodbye for what may be the last time.

Cargo hits the program queue May 18th, 2018.
