Created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, GLOW became a massive hit on Netflix after a successful first season. The series revolves around the female-wrestling organization known as Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. The show has a nostalgic 80’s flair with its hair metal and leg warmers. Set in 1985 Los Angeles, Ruth Wilder, a struggling actress, auditions along with dozens of other women in a fledgling professional wrestling promotion called the GLOW.
Ruth is at odds with GLOW’s director Sam Sylvia due to her tendency to overact. When Ruth’s former best friend, retired soap opera actress Debbie Eagan, arrives at the ring, their confrontation promises to either make or break the show.
The series stars Alison Brie as Ruth Wilder, Marc Maron as Sam Sylvia, Betty Gilpin as Debbie Eagen, Sydelle Noel as Cherry Bang, Britt Baron as Justine Biagi, Kate Nash as Rhonda Richardson, Gayle Rankin as Sheila The She-Wolf, Kia Stevens as Tamme Dawson, Jackie Tohn as Melanie Rosen, and Chris Lowell as Bash. The show is executive produced by Orange Is The New Black‘s, Jenji Kohan.
The announcement trailer has a nice throwback to Michael Sembello’s ‘Maniac.’ The girls of GLOW vamp in front of the camera. They lip-sync and gyrate in a locker room to the song as they are surrounded by a sea of glowing lights. Until Marc Maron’s Sam sticks his head in front of the camera and the music comes to a screeching halt.
Sam exclaims, “What the hell is going on here!?! We have a show to do!” Sam exits while glaring at the camera and the girls continue dancing. Not much is given away about what we can expect from season 2. However, the fun tone of the show is still present as ever.
The second season of Netflix’s GLOW hits the program queue June 29th, 2018.
