“Despacito” proves it’s a winner after all.
It was impossible to go anywhere in 2017 without hearing the smash pop/reggaeton crossover track “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee or its remix featuring Justin Bieber.
Now the colossal track has swept this year’s Latin Billboard Awards.
As millions watched the Telemundo telecast live from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, “Despacito” picked up a whopping six awards. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the song picked up Hot Latin Song of the Year; hot Latin Song of the Year, Vocal Event; Airplay Song of the Year; Digital Song of the Year; Streaming Song of the Year; and Latin Pop Song of the Year.
The sweep comes in after fans were perplexed by the song receiving no awards from this year’s Grammy Awards considering it was one of the hottest tracks of the previous year.
Fans were also surprised that Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee would not be performing the track during this year’s show, but the song made its debut at the 2017 telecast and would therefore be a repeat performance.
In addition to all six wins, Daddy Yankee also picked up songwriter of the year for “Despacito” and Solo Latin Rhythm Artist of the Year. With the award total coming to eight, Daddy Yankee became the night’s biggest winner.
Luis Fonsi also took home the Latin Billboard for Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year while Justin Bieber collected Crossover Artist of the Year.
The track became the most watched video on YouTube with over 5 billion views and hit no. 1 on the singles chart in countries including the US, UK, Venezuela, Mexico, Sweden, Lebanon, Ireland and Australia among many others.
“Despacito” has become proof that Latin artists, such as Badbunny and Ozuna, have much more crossover appeal than they ever have before.
