YouTube Red renews Cobra Kai for second season

Newfound love for an 80’s classic.

Youtube Red is bringing back Cobra Kai for a second season.

The Karate Kid sequel series, Cobra Kai, has taken the world by storm. The surprise hit series has been a critical darling even. It has scored the highly coveted 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience score is steady in the high 90s. The popularity of the series has convinced YouTube Red to greenlight a second season.

Cobra Kai Executive producers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have been stunned by the overnight success of a series that many initially wondered, “Why a Karate Kid series?” The producers point to the success of Netflix’s Fuller House and pop culture’s hunger for nostalgia helping Cobra Kia be the achievement that it is.

The television series takes place 34 years after the original film and follows the reopening of the Cobra Kai karate dojo by Johnny Lawrence and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso.  Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprise their roles from the films. The series also stars Courtney Henggeler; Xolo Maridueña; Tanner Buchanan; and Mary Mouser

Running parallel to the conflict are the story arcs of Lawrence and LaRusso’s students. For example, there are the students of Cobra Kai: a group of picked-on teenagers who find self-confidence under Johnny’s unconventional teachings, only to take their mentor’s aggressive philosophy too far. Johnny’s former sensei Kreese shadow still looms over Cobra Kai.  In contrast, Johnny’s estranged son, Robby Keene, comes under the wing of Daniel. Robby and Daniel both find redemption through the teachings of Daniel’s deceased mentor, Mr. Miyagi. Meanwhile, Daniel’s daughter, Samantha, is caught in the middle of these conflicts as she learns who her true friends are and a better path to follow.

Samantha falls for Johnny’s star student, Miguel, that sets up a nice Romeo and Juliet dynamic. The first season ended on a high note, giving fans just enough and craving more. Cobra Kai’s second season will begin production later this year and is scheduled to premiere on YouTube Red in 2019.
