Not even Moneybagg Yo could have anticipated getting to where he is now
Many times when a musician of any genre gets the ball rolling with their career, they do not expect to ever make it to much of any level of fame or commercial success. When they do however, it takes them very much by surprise. Such is the case for Memphis based rapper Moneybagg Yo.
After years and years of paying his dues and working his backside off in the underground scene, last year Moneybagg’s album Federal 3x debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.
Moneybagg’s collab tape with YoungBoy Never Broke Again Fed Baby’s came out only a few months, peaking at No. 21 on the chart as well.
His most recent musical outing, the solo tape 2 Heartless (released this past Feb) managed to reach the No. 16 place on the chart.
Moneybagg recently was caught up with by XXL where he talks about his beginnings and how floored he is by the success he has had over the past year or so, saying:
“I didn’t think I’d be this big, I ain’t gon’ lie. When I first started rapping, I was just doing it for the hood to notice me—the hood fame—just to get people’s attention around the city, to make me a little show money. But then music became my passion, it got real serious.
When I dropped the first one [Heartless], I dropped that because I felt no love in the streets. I had ended up feeling it a little when I dropped Federal 3x, like just all the fame and everybody coming around, all that. I felt the love and then little situations had happened and everybody went crazy, fled on me, so I felt 2 Heartless.”
According to the same XXL release, Moneybagg is also planning to put out another album this coming summer.
Keep up with music at Salute.
