Now that we are almost done with the first month of the new year, it’s time to talk about New Year’s resolutions. Every year we see the same posts, and the same sentiments from so many of our loved ones and even make them ourselves.
“I’m going to lose weight.”
“I’m going to get a new job.”
“I’m cutting people off.”
“I’m going to find love.”
A new year is the perfect time to start a new path. A clean slate is a great thought, right? But what happens to most people a month in? Two months in? six months in? In the fast-paced hectic lives of the 21st century, people lose focus easily. At the slightest misstep in their plan, many people will give up on their “resolution” for the easy way out, which is essentially comfort. It is hard for many of us to push outside of our comfort zones for something better, something new, something that we deserve, even if we don’t know it yet.
Life has shown us that it can be brutal and unpredictable on so many levels, unexpected losses come every day, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop trying to climb those mountains, unlock those doors, and close the one’s that are no longer serving us. As a wise woman named Deborah (Mrs. Bishop, I love you.) once told me “We only go around one time.” And she was right. No matter where we are now, there is no reason we cannot be in a better place, state of mind, better shape, by the end of the next earth’s cycle. Determination has been the barrier between so many great people and their destiny, their greatness lies within them, and they don’t even realize it.
If you think that I am going on a tangent as though I have never been in this position, you are gravely wrong. I have been in this exact position more times than I can count (depression will do that to you), I say all this to say I’m not living like that anymore. I won’t let what other people tell me, or what life throws at me get in the way of my dreams, my calling, or my greatness. Too many times, we let the thoughts of others dictate what direction we choose when they aren’t even a player in the game, when they don’t have a stake in it all. Or, we listen to the people who do have a stake in it all, but don’t want to see us win. To take the guessing game out of things, listen to yourself, what do YOU want to do? What serves YOU? What serves YOUR purpose? Whether it’s work, school, weight-loss, or love… your happiness MATTERS. One rock, even if it throws the train off the track, won’t stop you from building a new damn train.
So instead of making a new year’s resolution, make a new life resolution. What steps can you make to make your LIFE better each day? How can you work towards your dreams each day? If you can complete any of them, and stay consistent, you’re already on the right track.
Go out and find your greatness.
You don’t need a new year to do that.
