Star Wars: The Last Jedi Showcases Darkness
Pop culture is as thirsty for new Star Wars content as it ever was. On Friday, the first real trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped and it is powerful.
After at least 20 views, there are only a few certainties that can be drawn from what will hit the screens in December.
#1 Everything Is Not What It Seems
It is easy to fall into the trap of looking at footage and drawing literal conclusions from it. It appears as if a lot of what is being presented is most likely out of sequence.
For example at the end of the trailer a figure that is most likely Luke Skywalker somberly states “I only know one true thing. It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
After taking his ball and going home into exile after his apprentice/nephew Kylo Ren turned his back on him, Skywalker is making the type of point that is made when someone is trying to be talked into or out of something.
In this case, its most likely into training Rey who traveled a long way to find him as was seen in The Force Awakens.
The likelihood of that message being Luke’s final answer after Rey is seen training earlier in the trailer is highly unlikely.
If so, that would be the greatest swerve in the history of film and certainly something that would be saved for the film’s proper release.
#2 Kylo Ren Is Back On His A Game
There are some thinly veiled references to Ren studying the Journal of the Whills. To understand what the ancient books mean to the balance of the force, read this Wiki entry.
Ren is the ultimate student and to catch a glimpse of his hands tracing over what is most likely the ancient teachings spells trouble for many.
The Last Jedi must be darker in tone to push the story forward. With Ren’s father Hans Solo dead and an unhealthy obsession with his grandfather Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker chipping away at his soul, Ren will use what he’s learned to maim and destroy.
#3 Who Is Piloting The Millennium Falcon?
Solo’s dead and Chewbacca was always the ship’s wingman. That the Falcon is so prominently displayed is not a coincidence.
Most likely, its Finn but we also appear to see him nursing a few injuries early on. Again it seems like this sizzle reel is meant to generate more questions than answers.
The trailer also tips a heavy hand to Jedi masters and affiliates of the past. There is a lot to absorb in just under two minutes.
Best believe, we’ll keep picking through and turning over rocks.
