Philadelphia based indie rock band The War on Drugs just dropped a video for their song “Pain” in preparation for the release of their newest album, A Deeper Understanding, coming out Friday. This album will be the band’s first release with their label, Atlantic Records.
Since they first came onto the scene back in 2005, The War on Drugs has been pushing the envelope and doing whatever they can to insure their sound suits their standards. It’s easy to tell that Adam Granduciel (vocals, guitar), Anthony LaMarca (guitar), David Hartley (bass), Charlie Hall (drums), Robbie Bennett (keyboards), Jon Natchez (saxophone, keyboards) put a lot of heart and soul into their music, and this video is a solid reflection of that fact.
The song itself is melodic and emotional. From the very first note listeners can tell that this song will make them feel some sort of way. “Pain” has a mellow tone to it, this is music to do some soul-searching to. There’s no unnecessary flair to this song, nor are there any attempts to show off. This song is built around emotion, and each member of the band conveys that sentiment through their individual crafts. Granduciel’s vocals are soft, yet packed with heart. The melody carries the essences of summers long ago that still get looked back on fondly, laced with the hard hitting fact that reality waits and that time cannot be reversed. This song is about moving along the one-way path of life, feeling the pain that comes with such an experience, and living with a heart full of love despite it.
The video convey’s the song’s message exceptionally well. Like “Pain” it is simple and clear. Shot in a grainy black and white, clips of many people at various stages in their lives are mixed with shots of the band performing the song on a boat moving down a scenic river, perhaps the river of time itself. Throughout the video all the stages of one’s life are displayed, from clips of children and elderly people to loving young couples and rebellious teenagers. It’s artfully put together and compliments the song very well.
A Deeper Understanding is set to release Friday, August 25, and if the other tracks on the album have as much emotion as “Pain” does, then it’s guaranteed to be an experience. Definitely check out The War on Drugs, they’re not a band to miss.
